MHA recommends all states to establish a "Special Wing of Cyber Commandos" to combat cyberthreats

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) advised all states to form a Special Wing of Cyber Commandos in response to the escalating cyberthreats on Tuesday.

Over 100 fictitious bomb threats have been sent to Indian airlines in the last week, causing customers’ annoyance and financial losses for the airlines.

The majority of the threats were placed on X accounts, which were made using a dark web browser or virtual private network (VPN) that investigative agencies have not been able to identify.

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) made the decision in order to improve cyber defensive capabilities and in response to the increased threat of cyberattacks.

According to the order copy that the author was able to access, the Prime Minister suggested that a Special Wing of appropriately trained “Cyber Commandos” be established within a police organisation to combat cyber security threats from cyberspace during the DGPs and lGPs Conference that took place in January 2023 and 2024.

Over the next five years, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) intends to raise 5,000 Cyber Commandos.

The Cyber Commando Wing would be considered a national resource and an essential component of the police force.

A prospective According to the directive, Cyber Commandos shall be chosen from among active members of all ranks in the various police agencies of the States, UTs, and Central Police Organisations who possess a fundamental understanding of computer networks and operating systems.

After completing training in digital forensics, incident response, and information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure security, trained commandos will be required to work for their parent organisation and be assigned to tasks based on their acquired knowledge.

They may be used by MHA for short-term training and to respond to or mitigate cyberattacks, but they cannot be used for roles unrelated to their responsibilities as cybercommandos. It goes on to say that I4C-MHA will continue to work closely with the cyber commandos to enhance their skills and learn new things.

IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIIT Kottayam, IIIT Naya Raipur, Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) Gandhinagar, Defence Institute of Advance Technology (DIAT) Pune, National Forensic Science University (NFSU) Gandhinagar, and Delhi are all hosting the first group of 246 cyber commandos for six months of rigorous practical training.

The six-month program prepares students to tackle cybersecurity demands through practical instruction, industry exposure, and field trips.

These trainees were chosen based on their performance on a screening exam that was administered at 32 testing locations nationwide on February 24, 2024.

To choose the upcoming group of Cyber Commandos, I4C intends to hold the second screening exam on December 8, 2024.
