Microsoft (MSFT, Financials) has announced legal action aimed at preventing cybercrime that exploits flaws in its generative AI capabilities. The Eastern District of Virginia lawsuit seeks to prevent actions intended to take advantage of AI services and produce harmful content, the company said in a statement.
Microsoft said that its Digital Crimes Unit has started legal action to address criminal operations that used generative artificial intelligence methods. In its publication, the business detailed how to prevent malware that aims to circumvent security measures in AI systems from spreading.
According to Microsoft, foreign-based organizations are named in the court case as having unlawful access to accounts linked to generative AI services through the use of publicly available client credentials that were obtained from websites. The offenders reportedly auctioned access to their customized tools and altered AI capabilities. Both U.S. law and Microsoft’s Acceptable Use Policy are allegedly broken by these actions.
In their announcement, Microsoft claimed to have taken control of a website that was essential to the operation of the company. The company claims that its action aims to enhance awareness of the tactics employed for these services’ profit-making, disrupt more technological infrastructure, and get evidence regarding the people involved.
Microsoft emphasized that in order to prevent such misuse, it has strengthened its safeguards and implemented corrective measures. According to reports, the company’s broader strategy to combat cybercrime and guard against the exploitation of its AI technologies includes this legal action.
These efforts complement more than 20 years of DCU cybersecurity threat-addressing efforts, the firm said in a release. Microsoft has also provided lawmakers with recommendations based on enhanced industry collaboration and government regulations intended to stop technological misuse in a document titled Protecting the Public from Abusive AI-Generated Content.
Microsoft stated that it would continue to look for further measures to ensure AI services and will be committed to transparency in the publication of its findings. Additionally, the company stated that it is actively working with both public and private sector organizations to ensure that AI systems are protected against negative conduct.
By 12:52 p.m. EST on Monday, MSFT shares had dropped $4.13 from the previous close, down 1% to $414.82.
