The hiring of several former Inflection AI employees by Microsoft and its cooperation with the firm were approved by the UK competition regulator on Wednesday. The regulator stated that no more examination was necessary for this arrangement.
Given that both businesses create and distribute consumer chatbots, the Competition and Markets Authority launched an investigation in July to see whether the acquisition would raise concerns about competition in the nation.
According to the CMA, Inflection had a modest share of UK visitors for chatbots and Al Tools even before it was acquired. Unlike its competitors, Inflection was also unable to sustain or increase its chatbot user base.
Mustafa Suleyman, a co-founder of Google DeepMind, was appointed by Microsoft in March to lead its recently established Al division. It also employed a number of people from Inflection, the company he founded in 2022.
According to Reuters, Microsoft paid roughly $650 million to acquire access to Inflection’s Al models, allowing the business to pay back its investors, which included former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Bill Gates.
