Microsoft has begun testing AI-powered tools for creating images in Paint and rewriting text in Notepad, forty years after the two apps were first made available in the 1980s.

Today, Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11 who have updated to Paint 11.2410.28.0 and Notepad 11.2410.15.0 will be able to access these AI “experiences” (as the company calls them).

The recently unveiled Cocreator functionality is enhanced by the new Paint tools, generative fill and generative erase, which let users alter their photos and swap out specific components with AI-generated material.

In September 2023, Redmond began introducing Cocreator, which is based on OpenAI’s DALL-E text-to-image model, to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Canary channels.

“With generative fill, you can make edits and additions with just a few words while maintaining the existing art style of your project,” said Windows Inbox Apps group product manager Dave Grochocki.

“We are also introducing generative erase, a new AI-powered tool that helps you remove unwanted objects from the canvas, filling in the empty space left behind to make it look like the object was never there.”

The firm also announced a new backdrop remover tool in Windows 11 Insider releases that may assist in removing image backgrounds to obtain a cutout of the image subject, as part of a larger push to incorporate AI-powered features into the Paint image editor.

Microsoft’s Notepad, a simple text editing program first released in 1983, now has an AI-powered function called “Rewrite” (formerly CoWriter) that uses generative AI to automatically rewrite content.

“You can rephrase sentences, adjust the tone, and modify the length of your content based on your preferences to refine your text,” Grochocki added.

“Options to make your content longer or shorter and modifying the tone or format let you easily adjust your content for specific goals.”

Windows 11 customers in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and Germany can preview the rewrite. They must log in using a Microsoft account in order to use it.

In order to update Windows Notepad and make it competitive with more well-liked Notepad substitutes like Notepad2 or Notepad++, the firm eventually began introducing new capabilities in 2018 after years of staying the same.

In July 2023, Microsoft included a spell check and autocorrect function to the Windows 11 Notepad application, and in December 2023, a built-in character counter.

Since then, further features have been added, such as line number displays, tabs, text zoom, UTF-8 support, autosaving, wrap-around find and replace, and improved Unix & Mac compatibility.
