An OpenAI executive with seniority who briefly filled in as the company’s acting CEO during a tumultuous period last year has announced her departure from the artificial intelligence startup.
Chief technological officer of OpenAI, Mira Murati, announced in a written statement on Wednesday that she had “made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI” after much reflection.
“I’m stepping away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration,” she said.
CEO Sam Altman made the announcement later on Wednesday that two more senior executives are leaving as well. Murati, OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew, and another research leader, Barret Zoph, made their decisions “independently of each other and amicably,” according to a memo that Altman sent on social media to staff members.
These are the most recent high-profile exits from San Francisco-based OpenAI, best known for creating ChatGPT and founded as a nonprofit research center. Greg Brockman, the company’s president and co-founder, announced in August that he would be “taking a sabbatical” until the end of the year. A competing co-founder, John Schulman, departed in August to join Anthropic, which was established in 2021 by a number of former OpenAI executives.
Ilya Sutskever, a second co-founder who oversaw a group dedicated to AI safety, departed in May and founded his own AI business.
Jan Leike, the co-leader of Sutskever’s safety team, also quit a few days after Sutskever left, accusing OpenAI of allowing security to “take a backseat to shiny products.”
In a farewell letter to coworkers that was circulated on social media, Murati expressed her positive opinion of the business and Altman, calling it “at the pinnacle of AI innovation” and noting that it is difficult to leave a place one loves.
Altman thanked Murati for her contributions and noted that a corporation experiencing rapid growth would inevitably undergo leadership changes.
“I obviously won’t pretend it’s natural for this one to be so abrupt, but we are not a normal company,” Altman said in a post on X that also announced that six other people were taking on new roles.
After Altman was sacked by the board of directors late last year, causing turmoil in the AI sector, Murati was abruptly elevated to the position of interim CEO for the company. After that, the business appointed a new temporary CEO, reinstated Altman, and replaced the majority of the board members who had removed him.
