President Joko Widodo and Tesla CEO Elon Musk met on Monday, and afterward, Indonesia’s coordinating minister of investments said that Musk would explore building an EV battery plant in the country.
Indonesia’s coordinating minister of investments stated that Musk will take into consideration an offer to construct an EV battery plant in the nation, following a meeting between President Joko Widodo and Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Monday.
Following Minister Luhut Pandjaitan’s comments to reporters, Musk was not immediately available for comment.
Musk and Widodo met on Monday at the World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia. “We proposed that an EV battery facility with a precursor cathode be built here. And he’ll give it some thought,” Luhut informed.
According to Luhut, Widodo also requested that Musk think about funding an AI center in the nation of Southeast Asia and that SpaceX construct a launchpad on Biak Island, which is located in the province of Papua, Indonesia—an offer that the government has already made.
The Indonesian government has been attempting for years to persuade Tesla to establish EV manufacturing facilities in order to expand the nation’s EV industry by utilizing its abundant nickel resources.
Musk had introduced SpaceX’s satellite internet service for Indonesia’s healthcare industry on Sunday.
Starlink was now commercially available, but the government intended to target remote and impoverished areas with its services first.
In the world of satellite internet, SpaceX’s Starlink dominates, with over 60% of the 7,500 satellites in orbit.
