Nagpur Faces Cybercrime Surge: Rs 50 Crore Lost in 2024

Nagpur residents have suffered greatly as a result of the growth in cybercrime; according to data given by the city’s cyber division, total damages in 2024 amounted to Rs 50 crore.

Nevertheless, the cyber cell has recovered more over Rs 30 crore, with victims already receiving almost 13.1% of the total cash seized.

DCP Lohit Matani described how the funds were retrieved and returned. “Once the money is retrieved from the criminals, victims must obtain a court order to claim it. So far, Rs 3.7 crore has been returned to victims, while Rs 28.5 crore remains pending,” Matani stated.

He emphasized the need of using the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP) in the fight against cybercrime. The protocol links banks, law enforcement, and telecommunications firms. “When a suspicious transaction occurs, telecom companies or banks alert us with details of the portal involved. The information, including linked bank account details, is uploaded to the NCCRP along with a complaint ID,” Matani explained.

After that, the cybercrime complaint is sent to the appropriate police station for additional examination and handling. “Our main goal in such cases is to retrieve the defrauded amount as quickly as possible,” he added.

Matani also brought up the difficulties in pursuing cybercriminals, who sometimes hide their identities behind cutting-edge technology. “Many cybercriminals use VPNs, fake bank accounts, and identity theft to cover their tracks, making it difficult to identify and apprehend them,” he stated.

Matani promised that the cyber unit is equipped with cutting-edge technology to combat cybercrimes. “However, with the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals, authorities urge citizens to exercise caution while conducting online transactions to avoid falling victim to scams,” he stated.

The dangers of artificial intelligence and cybercrimes were previously emphasized by chief minister and home minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also stated that the state had the infrastructure needed to address the problem.
