Mulchandani, who has over 25 years of experience working in Silicon Valley and most recently the Department of Defense, offers “substantial private sector, startup, and government” expertise to the agency, according to the CIA.

The United States’ first defense agency, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), announced the hiring of Nand Mulchandani as its first-ever Chief Technology Officer (CTO) on Monday. William J. Burns, the director of the CIA, announced the appointment and stated that Mulchandani has over 25 years of experience working in Silicon Valley and, most recently, the Department of Defense. Mulchandani adds “substantial private sector, startup, and government” expertise to the agency.

According to Burns, Mulchandani will make sure the organization is using cutting-edge advances for the CIA’s missions. As CTO, he continued, “scanning the horizon for tomorrow’s innovations to further the CIA’s mission” will be on his agenda.

I’ve made it a priority to concentrate on technology since my confirmation, and the new CTO role is crucial to that endeavor. Director Burns expressed his happiness at Nand’s joining the team and how he will contribute his wealth of knowledge to this important new position.

Mulchandani was the US Department of Defense’s CTO and acting director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center prior to joining the intelligence organization. Mulchandani is a serial entrepreneur who co-founded and served as CEO of several profitable businesses, including ScaleXtreme (bought by Citrix), OpenDNS (purchased by Cisco), Determina (acquired by VMware), and Oblix (acquired by Oracle). Mulchandani stated he “could not refuse” the job offer in his announcement post on LinkedIn.

“It is an honor for me to join the CIA in this capacity, and I look forward to working with the amazing team of technologists and subject matter experts within the agency who already provide top-notch intelligence and capabilities to help develop a comprehensive technology strategy that yields exciting capabilities in close collaboration with partners and industry,” Mulchandani stated. He adores tiny, nimble teams that are driven to upend large markets. Mulchandani’s LinkedIn page states that he has a good history in enterprise infrastructure products, marketing, and sales.

Mulchandani graduated from South Delhi’s Bluebells School in 1987, according to his LinkedIn profile. He continued on to Cornell University in the US to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science. then went to Stanford to get a Master of Science in Management, and afterwards to Harvard to get a Master of Public Administration.
