Odisha Police to get new cybercrime wing says CM Mohan Charan Majhi

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi of Odisha stated that in order to address the issues of the modern era, his administration intends to establish a new cybercrime wing inside the state police.

Speaking during the 69th Police Duty Meet’s closing session on Monday, December 17, 2024, he claimed that investment fraud, digital arrest, and cyber fraud were all on the rise.

“Keeping these in mind, our government is determined to strengthen and modernise the cyber cell of the police department. For this, a goal has been set to establish cyber police stations in all the districts. A cybercrime branch will also be created in the state for high-level investigation and monitoring of cyber crimes with a senior officer in charge,” Mr. Majhi said.

The low conviction rates for crimes against women also worried him.

“The main reason for the low conviction rate is the lack of professional investigation and the severe lack of political will in the past,” Mr. Majhi said, adding that the state’s conviction rate should at least be taken to the national average.

“For this, the state government is setting up more women’s courts. A policy decision has been taken to set up women’s courts in four districts. Now, the police will investigate professionally and scientifically, and give irrefutable evidence,” he said.

According to the Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi, violence against women is not tolerated by the state government.

As a result of the scheme, Mr. Majhi opened additional police stations in the Puri area at Astaranga, Balanga, and Delang.

The modernization of the police force, police system changes, investigational infrastructure, and human resource training, he stated, are urgently needed.

He stated that all police stations would have the necessary number of cars for policing, adding that an underprepared police force will not be able to effectively apprehend and punish offenders.

Mr. Majhi said that in order to improve the force’s effectiveness, the state administration has chosen to fill around 5,000 positions.

The CM praised the police for their recent achievement in solving a few crimes.

Mr. Majhi also asked the police to focus on “criminals who are trying to create chaos in the society in a planned manner”.

“The protection that was given to such criminals earlier will no longer be given. Take strict action against them,” he told the gathering of senior officers.
