OpenAI and Broadcom discuss creation of new AI processor

The company behind ChatGPT, OpenAI, is in discussions with chip makers, such as Broadcom, to create a new AI processor.

Maker of ChatGPT, OpenAI is in talks to develop a new artificial intelligence processor with chip manufacturers, including Broadcom (AVGO.O). In order to address the scarcity of pricey GPUs, which it needs to create AI models like ChatGPT, GPT-4, and DALL-E3, OpenAI is investigating the possibility of producing AI processors itself.

The story also cited three people who were engaged and stated that Microsoft (MSFT.O), which launched a new tab-backed firm, is hiring former Google employees who created the internet search giant’s own AI chip, the tensor processing unit, and has planned to develop an AI server chip. An OpenAI representative stated that the company is “having ongoing conversations with industry and government stakeholders about increasing access to the infrastructure needed to ensure AI’s benefits are widely accessible.”

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, intends to raise billions of dollars to establish a network of semiconductor manufacturing facilities with chipmakers Intel (INTC.O), Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (2330.TW) as possible partners.
