Government sources said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 5 when he visits India in an effort to coordinate with the country’s expanding AI efforts.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), confirmed the scheduled meeting and said Altman will also meet with Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of IT, to explore possible uses of OpenAI’s capabilities in India.

The trip coincides with India’s aggressive foray into artificial intelligence through the recently revealed IndiaAI Mission, which has been given a five-year, Rs 10,371 crore government budget.

During his visit to Delhi, Altman is also expected to meet with top venture capital investors, including executives from Accel and Peak XV Partners, according to media.

The OpenAI CEO’s visit to India is a part of a larger global trip that also includes stops in South Korea, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, and France. After meeting with Prime Minister Modi for the first time in June 2023 to discuss AI rules, Altman is now on his second journey to India.

While India is ready to working with OpenAI, MeitY Secretary Krishnan stressed that open-source foundations will be given priority in the nation’s AI development. In the CNBC-TV18 interview, Krishnan said, “Our models will have to be built on open-source foundations,” emphasizing the government’s emphasis on data protection and sovereignty.

The visit comes just after OpenAI and SoftBank announced their recent alliance in Japan, wherein the two firms decided to form a joint venture to offer AI services to corporate clients in the country.
