According to Microsoft, OpenAI will begin providing users with free access to its ChatGPT generative AI chatbot without the need to sign up for the service.

OpenAI will begin letting customers access its free-to-use ChatGPT generative AI chatbot without having to sign up for the service on Monday, according to Microsoft (MSFT.O).

ChatGPT, which launched the GenAI boom in late 2022, can simulate human interaction and accomplish jobs such as summarizing extensive texts, making poems, and even coming up with party theme ideas.

The San Francisco-based startup stated that the functionality will be gradually implemented to “make AI accessible to anyone curious about its capabilities.”

According to data analytics firm Similarweb, the popular service, which formerly had the fastest-growing user base, has had its growth decelerate since May 2023, when its traffic peaked at 1.8 billion web views.

OpenAI stated that it has implemented new content controls for users who access ChatGPT without registering, such as filtering prompts and generations in a broader variety of categories. It didn’t clarify these categories.

Aside from the free version of ChatGPT, which does not have direct internet access, OpenAI provides commercial versions for individuals, teams, and businesses.

The business also stated that it may use user-provided content to improve its large-language models, but that users can disable this option.

The move comes roughly a month after billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk sued OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging they abandoned the startup’s initial objective of developing artificial intelligence for the good of humanity rather than profit.
