OpenAI promotes Matthew Knight to the position of CISO

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently declared that Matthew Knight will be joining the organization as its new Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

He wrote in a post on X, “Matt Knight will be our Chief Information Security Officer, having already served in this capacity for a long time. This has been our plan for quite some time.”

For almost four years, Matt has served as OpenAI’s Head of Security, overseeing security, IT, privacy engineering, and research for the AI startup.

Matt honed his broad leadership abilities and expertise as Co-Founder of Agitator, a firm that creates robust and safe dynamic radio frequency spectrum management systems, before joining OpenAI.

Before taking a position as Head of Security at OpenAI, he spent over six and a half years working at Agitator.

In his role as CISO, Matt will continue to push the boundaries of AI research, comprehend its implications, and optimize its advantages—particularly in the cybersecurity space. He will keep leading his teams to work together on security research with the larger security research community as well as with other teams inside the organization.

In addition to Matt’s elevation, OpenAI is also announcing other leadership changes to facilitate a seamless transition in the wake of other CEO departures.
