OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly told some shareholders on Friday that the business is considering changing its governance structure to become a for-profit organization run independently of the nonprofit board.
According to a source on Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed some shareholders that the company is thinking of converting its governance structure to a for-profit company that is independent of the nonprofit board. The story cited an individual who heard Altman’s remarks and stated that one scenario the board is examining is a for-profit benefit organization, which competitors like Anthropic and xAI are using.
It also stated that Altman and his other directors may ultimately choose to pursue an alternative course of action due to the fluidity of the reorganization negotiations. “We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone,” OpenAI stated in response to questions regarding the report. Our objective revolves around the nonprofit, which will always remain.”
