Lambo Kanagaratnam, Optus’ managing director of networks, has departed the company after nine years, with parent Singtel’s group CTO taking up the post on an interim basis.
Optus’ managing director, Kanagaratnam’s, departure was announced to staff on Friday by interim CEO and CFO Michael Venter, who stated that “the time is right” for a change in network leadership.
Kanagaratnam, according to Venter, “cares deeply about our customers and his team.”
“Under his leadership, our network teams have materially improved our customers’ overall network experience and have also become more customer-centric in the way we measure network experience,” Venter stated in a note.
“I hold the highest admiration for Lambo as someone who continually exhibits the qualities that we all know him for.
“He is calm under pressure, approachable, cares deeply about our people and our business, and is always professional.”
While a permanent successor is sought, Venter stated that Singtel’s group CTO, Jorge Fernandes, will “step in as interim leader of the Optus Networks team.”
“Jorge will retain his group accountabilities and will be on the ground with the team in Australia from the middle of March to ensure a smooth transition,” Venter said.
Optus’ network has been under the spotlight since a massive outage on November 8 last year.
Following the incident, there was some disagreement between Optus and its parent regarding a misattribution of the core cause and the role Singtel played.
Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, Optus’ CEO at the time of the outage, left the company in late November.
