Pimpri Chinchwad opens a new cybercrime unit and files the first case of a Rs 60 lakh share market scam

A new cyber police station has been formed under the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate (PCPC). The first case at this station was filed yesterday; it was a share market scam in which the victim was promised a 25–30% profit but was finally conned out of more than Rs 60 lakh. This cyber scam was immediately forwarded to the Cyber Police Station since it involved a substantial amount of money and was therefore a high-profile case.

The number of cybercrimes in Pimpri Chinchwad is rising quickly. On August 15, 2018, a distinct Police Commissionerate was established for Pimpri Chinchwad; nevertheless, there were no intentions to establish a cyber police station. But as cybercrime kept growing, it became clear that a full-fledged cyber police station was required. Vinoy Kumar Choubey, the current Commissioner, and other Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioners have persistently pushed for the district’s establishment with the Maharashtra government.

On October 10, the Cyber Police Station was ultimately sanctioned by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister, Ajit Pawar, following multiple rounds of correspondence with the state government. In Premlok Park, Chinchwad, the police station is housed inside the PCPC building. It was officially launched yesterday with the filing of its first lawsuit by a Sangvi resident, age 59. A case has been filed under BNS Sections 318(4) (cheating) and 316(2) (criminal breach of trust), as well as pertinent provisions of the Information Technology Act of 2000, against Kriti, Ravi Aggarwal (complete name and address unknown), and seven other unnamed individuals.

Police investigations state that the complainant saw an advertisement for share trading with a company named M Stock while browsing the internet for information about the stock market. The complainant was added to a WhatsApp group where the accused, Kriti, made contact with her after she clicked on the advertisement. The defendant offered investors who used M Stock’s trading platform gains of 25–30%. In order to trade shares, the complainant moved a total of Rs 60.3 lakh into multiple bank accounts. The lawsuit was filed nonetheless, because no gains were made and the money was not reimbursed. The issue is being looked into further by Police Inspector Ravikiran Nale, who is in charge of the new Cyber Police Station.

Regarding the opening of the new Cyber Police Station, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Doiphode told the media, “Earlier, there was only a cyber cell, so we often struggled with manpower for handling these fraud cases. However, this new police station has adequate manpower with a dedicated police inspector in charge. They have distinct powers. Exclusively, the Cyber Police Station will handle high-profle cases within its jurisdiction. Victims can lodge complaints at their nearest police station or directly at the Cyber Police Station. High-profile cases will be automatically transferred to the Cyber Police Station.”

Significant Advancement in Pimpri Chinchwad Crime Solving Because cybercrimes like fraud and hacking are becoming more complex and common, Pimpri Chinchwad needs a separate cyber police station. A full station, as opposed to a cell, has sophisticated infrastructure, trained staff, and the power to submit formal complaints, carry out in-depth investigations, and provide technical support. In addition to handling issues involving many jurisdictions, it improves public awareness and enables improved coordination with other agencies.

In this fast-urbanizing region, this specialized structure guarantees a more effective response and legal action against the expanding cyber dangers. In the past, the Cyber Cell had to examine these cases alongside ordinary police stations, which made it challenging to handle owing to a staffing shortage. It wasn’t a practical solution for police stations under PCPC jurisdiction to commit staff as well. The PCPC Administration believes that this Cyber Police Station, with its two assistant police inspectors, three police sub-inspectors, and forty-five police constables under the direction of a police inspector, will significantly aid in the investigation of criminal activity.
