There have been reports of a cyberattack against Planned Parenthood, the biggest abortion provider and facility in the United States. After listing the nonprofit organization as a victim on their ransomware victim’s website, the ransomware group RansomHub took responsibility for the attack.
93 GB of Data Stolen in Attack on Planned Parenthood
PCMag Australia reports that the company was initially made aware of the occurrence on August 28. According to Martha Fuller, CEO of the Montana office, “we immediately implemented our incident response protocols, including taking portions of our network offline as a proactive security measure.”
Fuller told the outlet, “We immediately implemented our incident response protocols, including taking portions of our network offline as a proactive security measure.” She added, “That investigation is ongoing. We are aware of the RansomHub post and want to assure our community that we are taking this matter very seriously. We have reported this incident to federal law enforcement and will support their investigation.”
In her full statement to the outlet, Fuller noted that the Planned Parenthood staff were “working to minimize any operational disruptions and continue providing care to our patients,” confirming that IT systems in the Montana office may have been impacted.
Concerns were raised when the ransomware perpetrator, RansomHub, promised to release the stolen material in a week, perhaps involving private patient health information. However, only financial, court, and administrative records were discovered among the sample data that the organization had provided.
Security researcher Dominic Alvieri claims that the VenomRAT Remote Access Trojan was used to breach the Planned Parenthood office. Through its press inquiry email, The Cyber Express requested more information from Planned Parenthood, but, as of right now, no response has been received.
Non-Profit Had Faced Extensive Cyberattacks Earlier
A breach earlier in 2021 resulted in the theft of the personal data of almost 400,000 patients from a planned parenthood location in Los Angeles.
Information including residences, insurance details, birthdays, and clinical data, including diagnosis, procedure, and/or prescription details, has been compromised due to the attack, according to the attack notification.
In 2020, the company was even more severely hit by a cyberattack in which financial, social security, medical, diagnosis, treatment, and date of birth data were all illegally obtained.
People who oppose abortion have paid close attention to the nonprofit reproductive health center, sometimes going so far as to resort to violent acts. One such instance involved the arrest of a former US Marine for setting fire to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Orange County, California.
At least eleven of the numerous attacks against abortion facilities that the US DOJ has documented are connected to Planned Parenthood.
