The wireless division of PLDT Inc. (PLDT), an integrated network operator, and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) are stepping up their efforts to combat cybercrimes and frauds in the Philippines. Since 64% of all transactions in the country are made using mobile devices, fraudsters have been focusing more on this country.
“The Philippines is a mobile-first country, which unfortunately makes it a prime target for fraud. Our responsibility as a telco is to protect both consumers and enterprises,” said John Gonzales, FVP at PLDT and president and CEO of PLDT Clarktel, during the Digital Nation Summit Manila, organized by GSMA.
Gonzales described a number of programs, such as involvement in the Open Gateway Initiative of GSMA, which improves digital security via the use of standardized application programming interfaces (APIs). He also highlighted new safety-enhancing technology from Smart and PLDT.
“By next year, we aim to roll out silent authentication to replace traditional OTPs, device location validation to detect fraudulent transactions, and improved Know Your Customer (KYC) measures to ensure secure operations,” said Gonzales.
In addition to technology, Gonzales stressed the need of stakeholder engagement and public education in the fight against frauds.
“Our #BeCyberSmart campaign continues to share practical tips to help people recognize and avoid scams,” he said.
In the first 10 months of 2024, Smart claimed blacklisting one million scam-related numbers and banning around two billion fraudulent communications. The business is also addressing phony cell towers that con artists use to transmit phony communications.
“We will continue working with government agencies, like the National Telecommunications Commission and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, to crack down on cybercriminals,” Gonzales said.
