India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024 officially began today, October 15. The annual IT festival, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched, is in its ninth edition. The International Telecommunication Union, a specialist institution of the United Nations, is organizing the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024, which Modi also officially opened during the occasion. “India has democratized digital technology,” says the prime minister.

“In India, telecommunications goes beyond connectivity—it’s a means of fostering equity and opportunity. A decade ago, when I introduced the Digital India initiative, I emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy. We identified four key pillars: reducing device costs, ensuring digital connectivity across the entire nation, making data widely accessible, and adopting a ‘digital-first’ approach as our guiding principle, he adds.”

“WTSA focuses on achieving global empowerment through consensus, while the India Mobile Congress aims to empower through enhanced connectivity. The connection between consensus and connectivity has been highlighted at this event. In a world increasingly marked by conflict, both of these elements play a crucial role,” says Modi.

“In the last decade, India has laid optical fibers spanning a distance equivalent to eight times the Earth-moon distance. At the India Mobile Congress two years ago, we introduced 5G, and now, every district in the country has 5G coverage. India has established itself as a 5G market, and we are now making swift progress towards developing 6G technology,” Modi adds.

Jyotiraditya Scindia also spoke to the guests at the inauguration event. “We march with the world in 5G, but we shall lead the world in 6G,” says Scindia. “In India, 5G is anticipated to inject an astounding 450 billion dollars into the economy by 2040. We have rolled out 5G across all 36 states and UTs, covering 98 percent of our districts and 80 percent of our population in just 22 months,” he adds.

IMC 2024 will take place over four days, ending on October 18. Several well-known companies in the sector, including Xiaomi, Qualcomm, Reliance Jio, and Ericsson, will participate in the event, which will be held in Pragati Maidan. At IMC 2024, the well-liked Meta RayBan XR eyewear will also be on display.

Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani also spoke at the event. “With AI, India has the potential to completely transform into the new-age factory and service center for the world,” says Ambani.

The event’s main focus will be 5G developments, which will include real-world AI application cases and demonstrations of cutting-edge technology. With the goal of incorporating Snapdragon’s most recent chips into Xiaomi smartphones, Xiaomi and Snapdragon are about to unveil a new collaboration. It is anticipated that this action will improve performance, particularly in low-cost devices.

A big draw will be Qualcomm’s exhibit, which highlights how on-device AI can enhance industrial processes as well as mobile experiences. Additionally, the business will advocate for wider 5G adoption, aiming for greater accessibility throughout India. The newest Qualcomm processors, including the 10-core, 12-core, and 8-core variants designed for demanding computing requirements, will be demonstrated for visitors to enjoy.

The demonstration of the Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 chip-powered Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses is an interesting feature of Qualcomm’s show. With features like text translation, real-time navigation, and immersive experiences, these glasses promise to integrate augmented reality into daily life. They draw attention to Qualcomm’s strategy for incorporating wearables into the IT industry.
