Public warning has been released by Rajasthan Police in response to an increase in cyber fraud cases in which con artists extort money by falsely accusing victims of involvement in money laundering and drug trafficking.
Police emphasised in the caution that scammers frequently impersonate representatives of several institutions and threaten legal repercussions unless victims pay an “online penalty.”
According to the advice, courts, courier services, and law enforcement do not formally coordinate to demand instant online payments for fines or penalties.
Penalties and challans are examples of legitimate payments that must be done via authorised, conventional means rather than through quick online transactions.
The new approach known as “digital arrest” is also mentioned in the advice. It involves scammers tricking victims into thinking they have been accused of a severe crime and then demanding money to give them “leeway.”
Scammers frequently fabricate documents to look like official notifications from investigative organisations such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Speaking to the media, a senior official of the city police said, “There are some easy tips to avoid being scammed. First, do not answer video calls from unknown sources. Secondly, since there is no legal provision called digital arrest, anyone threatening legal action and demanding money is a scammer.”
People have lost up to Rs 10 lakh on average as a result of these cyber-fraud schemes in recent months.
The public has been advised by police to exercise caution and double-check any communications from unidentified sources before acting.
