Politicians in Italy voice concern over the most recent data hack that may have impacted 800,000 people

Politicians in Italy demanded on Monday that citizens’ online data be better protected after an investigation into a hacking scheme that reportedly compromised important public data, including tax authorities and law enforcement.

Prosecutors in Milan claim that a private investigation firm that assembled dossiers on prominent Italian politicians and businesspeople for a charge was responsible for breaches that exposed the data of at least 800,000 Italians beginning in 2022. The identity of the targeted authorities was still being looked into by prosecutors.

Antonio Tajani, the Italian foreign minister, termed the hack “a threat to democracy,” and the opposition Democratic Party demanded that Premier Giorgia Meloni speak to lawmakers about data security.

The alleged primary hacker and Carmine Gallo, a former law enforcement official who oversaw a private investigative firm at the centre of the investigation, were among the four individuals under house arrest. The inquiry, which was made public on Saturday, also included 20 other individuals, including well-known businesspeople.
