Hackers, possibly from the pro-Russian hacking group APT28, sometimes referred to as Fancy Bear, have hacked the German air traffic control corporation Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) with a cyberattack.
On September 1, a representative at DFS, which has its headquarters in Langen close to Frankfurt am Main, stated: “We are taking precautions after our office connection was hacked.” DFS is making efforts to lessen the incident’s effects.
DFS highlighted that airplane traffic is unaffected by the hack and is running normally.
According to DFS, the attack happened last week. Whether the hackers were able to obtain data access is still unknown. The incident was reported to security officials, according to a DFS representative.
The incident was connected to APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, the hacker outfit. For a number of years, APT28 has been targeting commercial enterprises in the energy, defense, and logistics sectors.
The outfit is viewed by Western nations as a part of the Russian secret services. The organization became well-known to the German public in 2015 after a cyberattack on the Bundestag.
Background:
Germany called Russia’s ambassador for advice this spring after accusing Moscow of hacking the ruling party, defense and aerospace industries, and Germany itself.
Berlin added that the attacks, which had begun two years earlier, had been directed at the Social Democratic Party, which is currently in power in Germany, as well as businesses involved in IT, logistics, defense, and aerospace.
The German authorities claim that APT28 gained access to email accounts by taking advantage of a flaw in Microsoft Outlook.
The European Union accused a dangerous Russian cyber offensive against Germany and Czechia on May 3.
NATO additionally conveyed its support for Germany and Czechia concerning the Russian cyberattacks.
