Russia Disables Signal Messaging App as Information Control is Tightened

The Russian government’s communications watchdog announced that it had limited users’ access to the messaging software Signal.

The Russian government’s watchdog on communications stated on Friday that it has restricted access to the Signal messaging app. This is the most recent action taken by the authorities to tighten information restrictions in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine.

According to the agency, Roskomnadzor, Signal “violated the requirements of Russian legislation, which must be observed to prevent the messenger’s use for terrorist and extremist purposes,” which is why it took this decision.

Due to Signal’s end-to-end encryption, conversations can’t be easily intercepted by the Russian government.

Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s deployment of soldiers into Ukraine in February 2022, Russian authorities intensified their campaign against dissent and independent media. They have also disabled access to Twitter (which subsequently changed its name to X), Meta’s Facebook page, and Instagram. Several independent Russian-language media outlets that have been critical of the Kremlin have been blocked.

Following weeks of consistent slowdowns, YouTube experienced widespread outages on Thursday, posing the newest threat to the free flow of information.

Russian authorities have attributed the delays to Google’s inability to upgrade its hardware in Russia, but numerous experts have refuted this assertion, stating that the Kremlin’s intention to block public access to a significant platform that presents opposing viewpoints is more likely to be the cause of the slowdowns and the most recent outage.
