Russian resources related to the war hit by a cyberattack by Ukraine intelligence

The Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) of Ukraine announced on September 8 that it had successfully conducted a cyberattack against Russia. According to HUR, its cyber specialists attacked “several Russian resources involved in conducting the genocidal war.”

Since 2014, when Russia first invaded Ukraine, before the Euromaidan Revolution, there has been a cyberwar between the two countries. Ukraine’s cyber forces, including the so-called IT Army, HUR, and the SBU, have launched multiple assaults on Russian communications, military systems, and infrastructure since the invasion in 2022. In response, state-sponsored Russian hackers target banking and government websites in Ukraine.

According to HUR, the cyberattack impacted businesses that produced metal processing machinery, spare parts for Russian weaponry, and components for the radio-electronic industrial base. Additionally, the spy service stated that corporations engaged in building military infrastructure for Russia, the aggressor state, were the target of its resources.

Among the targeted entities, HUR lists SMKomplekt EK, KristElKom, KonturNIIRS, Chip-prof, Chelyabinsk Plant of Industrial Modernization, Sibinstrument, smetka.ru, and “several others.” The agency also mentions that the propaganda platform Simferopol Forum, positioning itself as a Crimean resource, experienced difficulties as a result of the attack.

According to HUR, throughout the operation, its cyber specialists were able to access fourteen servers. The agency asserts that by deleting system files, databases, and backup copies, it was able to completely destroy the targeted businesses’ internal architecture.

In addition, HUR reports that its cyber intelligence experts posted happy birthday wishes on the websites of the targeted resources in honor of Ukraine’s Day of Military Intelligence on September 7, the day of the attack.
