Ryan Smith returns to Intermountain Health, bringing extensive healthcare technology and senior leadership experience.
Intermountain Health has selected Ryan Smith as its next chief digital and information officer (CDIO) after a thorough nationwide search. Early in 2025, he will start his new position. A comprehensive hiring procedure that comprised both internal and external partners who screened applicants across the US was part of Intermountain’s hunt for a CDIO.
Smith is an accomplished leader with extensive experience with Intermountain and a strong foundation in healthcare technology. For almost 20 years, he held a number of high leadership positions throughout the company. After that, he had executive positions at Health Catalyst and at Banner Health, where he was the chief information officer and senior vice president of technology. Before becoming the chief operating officer of Graphite Health, Smith served as chief information officer (CIO) at Intermountain from 2020 to 2022. As the interim president and CEO of Graphite, Ryan is furthering the nonprofit’s mission to increase the accessibility, scalability, and universality of healthcare data.
“This opportunity is deeply meaningful to me,” said Smith. “I’m excited for the opportunity to make healthcare an easier, safer experience for patients, members, and caregivers alike.”
“I’m confident that Ryan is the right leader to help Intermountain successfully navigate both opportunities and obstacles as a model health system in the complex world of healthcare that lies ahead,” said Rob Allen, Intermountain Health president and CEO. “He will lead DTS to support our mission, vision, and strategy to simplify, expand proactive care, and improve the healthcare experience for our caregivers, patients, members, and communities.”
Ryan will answer directly to Chief Strategy Officer Dan Liljenquist in his role as CDIO for Intermountain. In addition, he will be a part of the Enterprise Leadership Team. Smith will be in charge of Intermountain’s Digital Technology Services (DTS), which includes Information Technology, Clinical Informatics, Digital Services, Data Services, and DTS Operations. Each team’s leader will continue to serve on the DTS Leadership Team and will answer directly to Smith.
