Samsung Electronics’ latest premium smartphones will offer several AI functions, like simultaneous translation of foreign language phone calls
Samsung Electronics’ (005930.KS) latest premium smartphones, revealed on Wednesday, will offer several AI functions, such as simultaneous translation of foreign language phone calls, as part of the company’s latest drive to compete with Apple (AAPL.O).
According to statistics provider International Statistics Corporation, Apple surpassed Samsung in 2023 smartphone shipments for the first time since 2010, as demand for premium handsets, which Apple controls, outpaced market growth.
In response, as part of its buyer-attraction strategy, Samsung is including a variety of artificial intelligence functions in its flagship Galaxy S 24 models.
The new phones will have real-time, two-way speech translation of a live phone call performed in two distinct languages, which the company claims is a first for a smartphone.
The on-device AI capability is available in 13 languages and is powered by Samsung’s generative AI training.
It also has a “circle-to-search” capability, which allows you to search for any part of a picture on your screen in Google. Other capabilities include AI translation and message tone selection (casual, formal, business, or social media).
There are also AI summaries and translations of voice recordings, “generative editing” of photographs that fill in non-existent backdrops, and a tool that uses AI to slow down real-time films by filling in missing frames.
On-device AI refers to generative AI functions that, once learned, are downloaded to each user’s device and do not require a cloud connection.
Companies like Qualcomm (QCOM.O.), open a new tab, and Samsung promote on-device AI as more safe for personal information because it does not require data transmission to the cloud for use.
AI Smartphones
Only 5% of smartphones launched in 2024 will be AI-capable, but this figure will increase to 45% by 2027.
In the long run, “generative AI on devices is bound to have a significant impact on the smartphone market, especially in terms of user experience,” stated Jene Park, Senior Analyst.
However, Park warned that this may not “immediately affect smartphone purchases” because generative AI functions require time to absorb more and better data to create value for users.
The Galaxy S24 series will be available starting January 31.
In the United States, the base Galaxy S24 will start at $799, with two higher-spec models, the S24 Plus and S24 Ultra, starting at $999 and $1,299, respectively.
Samsung has maintained the base and Plus models’ prices the same as last year. The Ultra’s price has increased by $100.
