The US Securities and Exchange Commission is looking into how technology and telecom companies handled the SolarWinds cyberattack in 2020

In order to see how they handled the SolarWinds (SWI.N.)  cyberattack in 2020, the US Securities and Exchange Commission is examining technology and telecom businesses i, it reported on Tuesday.

The hack of information technology company SolarWinds, one of the largest and most sophisticated cyberattacks in the United States, was discovered in December 2020, granting access to thousands of businesses and government agencies using its products.

Hackers were able to utilize the company’s flagship network management software, Orion, as a launching pad into US government networks and overseas targets.

The regulator has requested internal communications from affected organizations about the impact of the cyberattack, as well as investigations into vulnerabilities in corporate security and past cyberattacks, according to the report, which cites people familiar with the case but does not identify the companies.

Last year, the SEC sued the software company and its senior information security executive, alleging they cheated investors by concealing cybersecurity flaws during the major hack.
