Silicon Box plans to construct its new multibillion-euro chip factory in the town of Novara, which is located in the industrialized northwest of Piedmont.

Silicon Box, an Italian semiconductor company based in Singapore, intends to build its new multibillion-euro chip factory in the town of Novara in the industrialized northwest Piedmont area.

Under a government-backed agreement, the three-year-old firm, which was founded by the American chipmaker Marvell (MRVL.O.), will invest 3.2 billion euros ($3.4 billion) to develop so-called “chiplets” in Italy, which can be as small as a grain of sand.

Advanced packaging, a low-cost method of joining tiny semiconductors to create a single processor that can run everything from data centers to home appliances, is how chiplets are assembled.

The initiative is a component of Italy’s ongoing efforts to entice technological businesses to invest, including the scrapped agreement with American chipmaker Intel (INTC.O.).

The location of the plant was not disclosed when Silicon Box and the Italian Industry Ministry announced the investment in March.

The sources, who wished to remain anonymous because the details of the negotiations are not known, stated that Silicon Box was inclined to select Novara from a shortlist that also included two locations in the northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto.

Silicon Box did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the industry ministry declined to comment.

According to one of the sources, on June 28, Silicon Box and the industry ministry were supposed to confirm the plant’s site.

When the project is fully implemented, it is anticipated to create 1,600 new direct jobs in addition to the indirect jobs created by the facility’s development and the larger supply and logistics ecosystem.

According to Industry Minister Adolfo Urso, the project is estimated to incur operating expenditures of approximately 4 billion euros over a 15-year period in March.

Italy has allocated nearly 5 billion euros in government assistance to entice overseas chip manufacturers.
