As part of its national AI policy, Singapore wants to quadruple its pool of artificial intelligence expertise, including machine-learning scientists and engineers, to 15,000, according to deputy prime minister Lawrence Wong.
The Southeast Asian country of 5.45 million people, which is home to the Asian headquarters of global tech giants such as Google owner Alphabet and Microsoft, also stated that it would work to increase its available high-performance computing resources by securing access through partnerships with chipmakers and cloud service providers.
According to a company filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Nvidia sales for the quarter ending in October comprised $2.7 billion from Singapore, following only the United States, China, and Taiwan.
Singapore also vowed, as part of its AI plan, to expand government incentives for the sector, such as by supporting accelerator programs for artificial int startups and encouraging corporations to establish AI “centres of excellence.”
In addition to the effort to attract foreign expertise, officials intend to expand domestic AI training programs and maintain a supply of graphics processing units (GPUs) for use by the country’s academics.
Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) unveiled a $52.3 million ($70 million SGD) effort on Monday to create Southeast Asia’s first major language model that caters to the region’s languages.
