SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell announced at a press briefing on Tuesday that the business has begun selling satellite lasers, which are used for quick in-space communications, to other satellite companies.
SpaceX has begun selling satellite lasers, which are used for rapid in-space communications, to other satellite companies, said company President Gwynne Shotwell during a press briefing on Tuesday.
SpaceX’s thousands of Starlink satellites in low-Earth orbit use inter-satellite laser links to transmit data at the speed of light, allowing the network to provide global internet coverage with fewer base stations.
Shotwell, speaking on a panel at the Satellite Industry Conference in Washington, said SpaceX, as a provider, will sell that technology to other firms.
“We’ll roll that out… with our new Polaris Dawn mission coming up here this summer on a Dragon capsule,” Shotwell added, alluding to the company’s planned private astronaut journey in its Dragon space capsule.
Shotwell stated the laser option was termed “Plug and Plaser,” implying that clients could easily install the equipment on their spaceship.
Space firms have chosen to sell spaceship components in order to diversify their revenue streams and raise funds for larger capital-intensive projects. SpaceX is designing and testing its next-generation Starship rocket, which will be cheaper but significantly more powerful than its workhorse Falcon 9.
“We don’t typically sell components, so this is a new experience for us,” Shotwell said during the panel discussion. She stated that SpaceX was already in contact with potential customers.
