Spotify accuses Apple for violating Digital Markets Act

Spotify is criticizing Apple once more. This time, it has nothing to do with in-app purchases or App Store issues. Spotify has claimed that Apple’s removal of the feature that lets customers adjust the volume of linked devices right from their iPhone violates the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This is the most recent disagreement between the two businesses on Apple’s platform guidelines.

In the past, iOS Spotify Connect users could change the volume with their iPhone’s physical buttons. However, this functionality was eliminated by recent updates made by Apple.

The DMA, particularly Article 6(7), which mandates that gatekeepers permit interoperability between their platforms and third-party services, has drawn criticism from Spotify for this action.

The modifications will take effect from September 3.

Users of Spotify for iOS will no longer be able to adjust the level on connected devices without using the in-app volume slider as of September 3. This solution won’t affect users adjusting the volume on iOS Bluetooth, AirPlay sessions, or Android devices; it will only be required for Spotify Connect users on iOS.

The claim from Spotify is the latest in a long line of disagreements between the two businesses concerning Apple’s platform guidelines. The business has already charged Apple with engaging in anti-competitive behavior with regard to connections and in-app purchases.
