In order to fight cybercrime involving overseas nationals, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Sri Lanka is working with China’s law enforcement authorities on cooperative investigations.

On September 2, 2024, Sri Lankan CID officers welcomed the Chinese team to their Colombo headquarters. To support these initiatives, they are expected to stay in Sri Lanka for a duration of one month.

The Chinese government used the group to help the Sri Lanka CID address cybercrime challenges in response to invites from the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Public Security.

The CID has made clear that they expect this cooperation with the Chinese law enforcement team to lessen difficulties, including language challenges, software shortages, and inadequate technical support.

According to Mr. Rohan Premaratne, the DIG of the CID, this alliance could help in lessening the rising trend of transnational criminal activity in Sri Lanka and the surrounding area.

DIG Premaratne also conveyed his gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for their timely assistance and for making the team’s last-minute trip to Sri Lanka possible.
