Elon Musk’s Starlink is going up against Amazon and telecom provider Vrio, who said that they would be collaborating to develop a satellite internet service in seven South American nations.
Elon Musk’s Starlink will face competition from Amazon (AMZN.O.) and telecom company Vrio, which said on Thursday that they would be launching a satellite internet service together in seven South American countries. Customers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia will be able to access the service through Vrio, the U.S. company that oversees both Sky Brasil and DirecTV’s Latin American division.
Vice President of Vrio Lucas Werthein stated, “We think the opportunity is huge.” A former Starlink employee launched Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which uses satellites in low-earth orbit to deliver the internet. Werthein stated, quoting World Bank figures, that “about 200 million people in the region have poor, little, or no internet access.” “Add to that the geographical terrain and, of course, a continent that has challenges in making large infrastructure investments.”
Per the Project Kuiper launch schedule, the service will go live in Argentina in the middle of 2025. In the upcoming months, Project Kuiper will present its strategy for launching 3,236 satellites into orbit, according to Bruno Henriques, head of commercial development for the company in Latin America. In 2019, Amazon declared its intention to contribute $10 billion to the project. “Our goal is that all customers, whether they live in urban, suburban, or rural areas, have the same level of broadband access,” Henriques said.
