Telecom authorities are getting ready to allot spectrum for satellite internet services, so Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband service is ready to start operating in India. As a result, Indian consumers will soon be able to access high-speed internet by satellite, even in places without access to optical fiber or mobile networks. However, Jio Satcom, Airtel OneWeb, Amazon Kuiper, and other telecom behemoths are all competing with Starlink for a share of the satellite internet market.
Spectrum allocation for Starlink Satellite Internet Service nears completion
After obtaining recommendations from the telecom regulator by December 15, 2024, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is getting ready to make judgments about the distribution of spectrum for satellite broadband services. Although Jio and Airtel support the allocation through an auction format, it is anticipated that the procedure for allocating spectrum would resemble that of 2G services.
In order to start operations in India, Starlink, which has already launched its satellite internet service in the US, Europe, and Australia, is currently working to finish the necessary regulatory compliances. As early as 2022, the business has applied for approval to start satellite broadband in India. According to recent announcements from Starlink, the necessary compliances will be completed soon, opening the door for an upcoming service launch.
Jio, Airtel, and Amazon prepare for competition in Satellite internet space
After spectrum is allotted, Jio and Airtel will be prepared to launch satellite broadband services as they have both finished their regulatory procedures. However, before they can launch services, Starlink and Amazon Kuiper are still working to ensure they comply with Indian laws.
By the end of January 2025, a decision on spectrum allotment might be taken, according to Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The choice will have a significant impact on the official launch date of satellite internet services in India. When satellite broadband is up and running, it will revolutionize the internet by providing fast, dependable internet to people in faraway locations.
