A destructive Chinese cyber-espionage campaign has infiltrated several U.S. and foreign telecommunications businesses, including T-Mobile’s network, as per media reports.
As part of a months-long campaign to spy on the cellphone communications of high-value intelligence targets, hackers associated with a Chinese intelligence agency were able to breach T-Mobile. The exact time of the incident has not been specified.
“T-Mobile is closely monitoring this industry-wide attack,” a company spokesperson said in an email.
“At this time, T-Mobile systems and data have not been impacted in any significant way, and we have no evidence of impacts to customer information.”
According to media sources, it was unclear what information, if any, was stolen from the calls and communications records of T-Mobile subscribers.
After breaching an unknown number of telecom businesses, China-affiliated hackers acquired surveillance material meant for U.S. law enforcement agencies, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the FBI and the U.S. cyber watchdog organization CISA.
Chinese hackers gained access to U.S. broadband providers’ networks earlier in October, including those of Verizon Communications, AT&T, and Lumen Technologies. They also took advantage of systems used by the federal government for court-authorized surveillance.
The U.S. government and others have previously accused Beijing of using hackers to access computer networks abroad, but Beijing has denied these allegations.
