Attackers are using adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) attacks, which overcome standard security measures like MFA and EDR by using advanced phishing toolkits for identity theft and live session hijacking.
What is AitM Phishing?
AitM phishing makes the target look real while the attacker blocks the session by using tools to act as a proxy between the target and the real application. Using this method, attackers can watch and take over the user’s session and frequently do so for a long time.
How AitM Toolkits Work:
Reverse Web Proxies, which route requests via a fake website, and Browser-in-the-Middle (BitM) attacks, in which the attacker remotely controls the victim’s browser in order to obtain credentials, are the two main methods.
Evolving Threat Landscape:
Phishing is still an important cybersecurity risk since attackers are focusing on identity as their new perimeter. Traditional techniques, such as blocking known-bad URLs, are becoming less and less successful. Rather, effective detection methods—specifically, security measures based on browsers—are required to stop phishing attacks before they ever start.
Conclusion:
Organizations need to start using new detection and response techniques, especially within browsers, to guard against advanced AitM phishing attempts as identity becomes the main target for cyberattacks.
