The Google Play Bug Bounty Program is closing

After deciding that its objective has been met, Google is ending the Google Play Security Reward Program (GPSRP).

After deciding that the Google Play Security Reward Program (GPSRP) has accomplished its objective, Google will shortly terminate it. Participating bug bounty hunters have been notified by Google that the GPSRP is being discontinued. The company explains that this decision was made in response to a decline in actionable vulnerability reports, which it attributes to “the overall increase in the Android OS security posture and feature hardening efforts.” A notice on the bug bounty program’s page states that new entries will be accepted until August 31, 2024, and that choices on final rewards will not be made until September 30, when the program will be formally terminated.

The tech giant has worked with the creators of some well-known Android apps as part of the Google Play bug bounty program to assist them in identifying and fixing vulnerabilities in their products. For remote code execution exploits that didn’t require user input, bug bounty hunters could get up to $20,000; for sensitive data thefts that didn’t require user interaction, they could make up to $5,000. After seven years, Google claims the project has accomplished its goal of motivating application developers to create their own security programs. Only a few months ago, the tech giant increased the payments for vulnerabilities found in its own mobile applications tenfold; researchers could now earn up to $450,000 for a single vulnerability report.

Through its bug bounty programs, Google will award $10 million in total in 2023, bringing the total amount paid out since 2010 to around $60 million.
