ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, claims to have fired an intern for “maliciously interfering” with one of its AI models’ training.
However, the company asserted that the assertions “contain some exaggerations and inaccuracies” regarding the magnitude of the harm inflicted by the unidentified person.
It follows accounts of the incident that went viral on social media over the weekend.
The most widely used AI chatbot in the nation is the Doubao ChatGPT-like generative AI model from the Chinese tech behemoth.
“The individual was an intern with the [advertising] technology team and has no experience with the AI Lab,” ByteDance said in a statement.
“Their social media profile and some media reports contain inaccuracies.”
The company further stated that the intern’s conduct had no impact on its commercial web operations, including its massive language AI models.
Additionally, ByteDance refuted claims that the event disrupted an AI training system consisting of thousands of potent graphics processing units (GPUs), causing damage exceeding $10 million (£7.7 million).
ByteDance stated that it has notified the intern’s institution and industry associations about the incident in addition to terminating the individual in August.
Some of the most well-known social media apps in the world, such as TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin, are run by ByteDance.
Because of how user-friendly its apps are, it is frequently regarded as a leader in algorithm development.
The social media behemoth is making significant investments in AI, much like many of its competitors in China and beyond.
Its Doubao chatbot and numerous other apps, such as Jimeng, a text-to-video converter, are powered by the technology.
