U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son in Washington on Monday to discuss strengthening semiconductor collaboration and supply chain diversification, according to the State Department.
In September, US President Joe Biden visited Hanoi and inked an agreement to strengthen bilateral ties as part of Washington’s efforts to counterbalance China in the Indo-Pacific.
The United States is working to minimize its reliance on Chinese supply chains by developing domestic manufacturing and increasing trade with reliable allies. This is especially true in semiconductor manufacturing, where Washington is looking to reduce the sector’s exposure to China-related issues such as trade disputes and tensions over Taiwan.
According to the State Department, Blinken and Son discussed expanding collaboration in areas like human rights, security, education, and culture.
Rights groups, including Amnesty International, accused Biden of downplaying human rights concerns during his September visit to Vietnam.
During that tour, Biden stated that he discussed human rights issues with leaders he met with.
