Turkey established new Cybersecurity Directorate to strengthen defence against cyber threats

Turkey has created a new Cybersecurity Directorate to boost its defense against cyber attacks, according to a presidential order published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday.

The newly constituted group will be in charge of implementing decisions made by the Cybersecurity Board, which will be led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The board will also comprise major ministries such as the interior, justice, defense, transportation, and infrastructure, as well as industry and technology.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz stated in a post on the social networking platform X that the directorate will develop policies, goals, and objectives for cybersecurity, as well as establish action plans and undertake initiatives to assist cybersecurity and information security.

The vice president stated that the directorate will also improve collaboration between the public and commercial sectors, as well as universities.

In 2024, the Turkish government announced a cybersecurity strategy aiming at strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure and increasing national preparedness against cyber attacks.

In October, Turkish officials apprehended nine men for suspected links to an international cyber-espionage network.

According to Xinhua, the suspects engaged in cyber espionage by selling stolen personal information to purchasers, including terrorist outfits, via social media platforms, quoting the semi-official Anadolu Agency.

Organised criminal organizations were suspected of utilizing stolen data to blackmail civilians, particularly young people and children, according to the study.

According to Anadolu, Turkish officials have shut down 18 websites that sell such unlawful material.

The intelligence agency led the arrest operation in coordination with the Gendarmerie General Command and the National Cyber Incident Response Centre, and it was overseen by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, according to the report, which did not specify when the operation took place.
