Uber is launching an AI assistant to support electric vehicle drivers

As part of its efforts to reduce emissions, Uber Technologies will launch an Al assistant fuelled by OpenAl’s technology to assist drivers in making the switch to electric vehicles.

The ride-hailing company has long supported the changeover to electric vehicles (EVs) and has committed USD 800 million to help its driver partners make the transition completely to EVs by 2040.

The Go-Get Zero event in London on Tuesday saw the unveiling of Uber’s Al assistant, which is based on OpenAI’s GPT-40. Early in the upcoming year, the chatbot is scheduled to debut in the US before moving on to other countries.

According to Uber, it will offer customized responses based on the driver’s city and available incentives. In early 2025, the business plans to extend the chatbot’s application to include queries about topics other than electric vehicles.

Every month, almost 180,000 Uber drivers in North America and Europe switch to electric vehicles.

“Uber drivers are adopting EVs five times faster than the average motorist in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. In London, nearly 30% of all miles driven on Uber are now electric,” CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said.

In order to assist drivers who want to convert to electric vehicles, Uber is also starting a mentorship program.

In addition, it is giving USD 50,000 to the top merchants on its food delivery network so they can use the money for their own sustainability projects and expand their customer base.

Also, Uber is starting a series of pop-ups where users may test drive electric vehicles. Users in Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, and London can book a ride in a Rivian R1, while users in London can test out the Lotus Eletre.
