Uber launches women-only bike taxi service in Bengaluru

Uber India, a ride-hailing behemoth, launched “Uber Moto Women” in Bengaluru, the world’s first women-only bike taxi service. The business, which links female drivers with female passengers, plans to open in additional major cities, including Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Uber Moto women drivers will be able to choose whether to take all clients or just female riders.

Uber has also included RideCheck, a system that tracks unusual pauses and route deviations, phone number anonymization, and real-time trip sharing with up to five trusted contacts in order to protect passenger safety. Women customers can also get priority support from a special 24-hour safety helpline.
The debut coincides with the notable expansion of India’s bike taxi industry, which, according to KPMG statistics, saw over 280 million trips across platforms in 2022. More than a million bike taxi trips are being generated each month in Bengaluru, a crucial market. Industry sources claim that Rapido holds a 60% market share and is the market leader in the area.

The Motor Vehicles function does not specify “motorcycles” as acceptable vehicles to function as contract transport, but several states have outlawed them, even though bike taxis are still operated through aggregators like Rapido, Ola, and Uber. Three-wheelers and taxi unions have opposed the bike taxis because they believe the former’s cheaper prices put them at a disadvantage.

Nonetheless, the Union government has suggested changes to the Motor Vehicles Act that would permit motorcycles to be used as “contract carriers.” If accepted, these changes would establish a legal basis for the operation of bike taxis in India.
