Sources indicated that personal information from the British military services was taken in a massive data breach, with the Chinese government suspected of being behind the cyber attack.

Sources claimed on Tuesday that personal information from Britain’s military services was obtained in a huge data breach, with the Chinese state suspected of being behind the cyber attack.

The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) has yet to comment on the story, although Defence Minister Grant Shapps is scheduled to address parliament on Tuesday.

Sources reported the government would not name the countries involved, but it believed China was behind an attack on a payroll system that stored the identities and bank account information of current service members and certain veterans.

Mel Stride, the British Work and Pensions Minister, said the database, which was administered by an external contractor, was swiftly taken offline and that more details about the incident would be released soon.

“The military proceeded quickly to take this database down. “It is a third-party database, not one run directly by the Ministry of Defense,” he stated.

In March, Britain’s military accused Chinese hackers and a Chinese corporation of being responsible for two high-profile attacks in recent years against Chinese lawmakers and the country’s electoral authority.

At the time, the Chinese embassy in London stated that the charges were “totally fabricated.” China has not responded.
