Apple has released a software update to address vulnerabilities that cybercriminals have “actively exploited” to attack Mac devices with Intel processors.
In a security advisory, the tech giant said it was aware of two vulnerabilities that “may have been actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems.”
We refer to these problems as “zero-day” vulnerabilities. A macOS software update (called macOS Sequoia 15.1.1) and updates for iPhones and iPads, including those running the outdated iOS 17 software, were published by Apple to address such issues.
“Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems,” said the company.
It further said that enhanced checks were used to address the problem. How many Mac users have been attacked and the identity of the attackers are yet unknown.
Google’s Threat Analysis Group security researchers reported the flaws.
These flaws affect WebKit and JavaScriptCore, the web engines that run web content and power the Safari browser.
As soon as possible, Apple consumers should upgrade their Macs, iPhones, and iPads.
The tech behemoth Apple warned iPhone owners in at least 98 countries, including India, in July of a possible new mercenary malware attack similar to “Pegasus.”
According to the Apple warning, it detected that “you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID.”
In the warning, the iPhone maker further said that this attack is “likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do.”
The IT giant may have used ‘mercenary spyware’ like Pegasus from the NSO Group to target selective users in 92 countries, including some in India, with danger notifications in April of this year.
