The sale of antivirus software produced by the cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, located in Moscow, will be prohibited in the US. The US Department of Commerce stated in a statement on Thursday that the company’s activities in the US posed a risk to national security “because of the Russian government’s offensive cyber capabilities and capacity to influence or direct Kaspersky’s operations.”
“Kaspersky will generally no longer be able to, among other activities, sell its software within the US or provide updates to software already in use.” The Department further stated that, due to the risk, both individual and business users of Kaspersky’s widely used antivirus software should look for an alternative. “Russia has shown time and again they have the capability and intent to exploit Russian companies, like Kaspersky Lab, to collect and weaponize sensitive US information, and we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to safeguard US national security and the American people,” Gina Raimondo, the secretary of commerce, said.
As of July 20, Kaspersky software sales in the US will be prohibited. Up until September 29th, Kaspersky will be able to give software updates to current users. The purpose of Kaspersky’s software is to shield users from online dangers like malware and trojans. Installation of the software on government-owned devices has been prohibited in the United States since 2017, and the Federal Office for Information Security in Germany issues a warning against its use.
Kaspersky, a private international cybersecurity company without any connections to the Russian government, has refuted claims that its products are dangerous.
