Visakhapatnam witnessed an alarming surge in cybercrime

Cybercrime in Visakhapatnam has surged, with losses reaching ₹115.3 crore in 2024—a startling 566% rise over prior years. Authorities have increased their efforts to address the rising problem as a result of the steep increase in cyber-related offenses, which has prompted serious worries about internet security.

Phishing scams, fraudulent investment schemes, and part-time work scams are the main causes of this increase. As cybercriminals take advantage of people’s growing dependence on internet transactions, these scams have gotten more complex. Losses from identity theft, cyberstalking, and financial fraud have all been recorded by victims. In actuality, more than 13,000 Visakhapatnam citizens have been victims of different cybercrimes in recent years, many of which go undetected.

By taking swift action, the city’s police have been able to retrieve ₹4.6 crore for 150 victims and freeze ₹18 crore from the accounts of scammers. However, difficulties still exist, particularly when addressing new types of fraud such as online love scams, phony employment offers, and cryptocurrency scams.

Because early reporting greatly improves the likelihood of freezing the stolen cash and recovering damages, authorities encourage citizens to report cybercrimes as soon as they happen. Experts caution that the true scope of cybercrime is still underreported, despite initiatives to increase awareness and enhance reporting.

The surge in cybercrime emphasizes how urgently individuals must be educated, vigilant, and protected from more complex schemes through improved cybersecurity safeguards.
