The service sector may benefit from voice calls that mimic human communication, but consumers and businesses are being targeted by cybercriminals using the same artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled technologies. Professionals at the recently held BSides Ahmedabad 2024 conference emphasized the negative aspects of technology.
“While AI and machine language (ML) have changed the world of cybersecurity, they now pose challenges in the form of malware that is difficult to detect. Such malware can be programmed to mimic human behaviour, adapt to its environment, and make automated decisions. This improves the effectiveness of targeted email attacks, known as spearphishing, and enables the discovery of previously unknown vulnerabilities,” a speaker said.
Although deepfakes, which mimic a celebrity’s voice or look, are well-known, experts claim that speech-based phishing, also known as vishing, has greatly improved recently.
The event was attended by senior IPS officer Shamsher Singh, member of parliament K V Reddy, state and city police cyber cell officials, military officials, and industrial security specialists. Topics covered in the sessions ranged from protecting vital systems to digital arrests.
Polish speaker Andrzej Olchawa discussed the topic of satellite hacking, in which highly skilled professionals can take over a spacecraft. “They target space link extensions (SLEs) to cause denial of service (DoS). To pull this off, they need knowledge of telemetry and telecommand,” the event organizers said.
Arun Mane brought attention to possible security threats related to electric vehicles in another session.
