The municipal police have warned the public not to accept wedding invitation files sent via WhatsApp from unknown numbers, as the wedding season is already well underway.
According to the police, scammers are inserting phishing links into these e-invite cards. “Cyber fraudsters are using wedding invitations to deceive people and steal their personal information,” police said in a statement posted online. These wedding invites install unauthorized programs when they are downloaded, giving scammers the ability to gather and send private information. Scammers can use this information to commit financial fraud or identity theft, including contacts, banking information, and passwords.
“To avoid being scammed, do not download attachments from unknown numbers. Report such incidents immediately to the cyber helpline at 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in,” said the police.
Police cautioned the public against downloading attachments received over email and WhatsApp in order to prevent becoming victims. “It’s essential to verify the sender before opening any file or link. Enabling security features on the device, such as antivirus software and app permissions, can also help prevent malware installation,” the officer said. The police also emphasized how crucial it is to enable two-factor authentication for extra protection and to update WhatsApp and device software frequently to fix any flaws. “Stay cautious of unsolicited invites and always be wary of offers that seem too good to be true,” the officer said.
