X promises to stop collecting personal data from European users in order to develop its AI

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) of Ireland said on Wednesday that social network X has promised to cease collecting personal data from European users in order to develop its artificial intelligence program, a practice that has drawn harsh criticism.

The social media behemoth, formerly known as Twitter, halted processing personal data found in user postings made public in the European Union and European Economic Area last month. It had been training its Grok AI chatbot with the data for over three months.

All 27 nations of the European Union, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, are included in the EEA, which enables them to participate in the EU single market.

“It is now a permanent commitment” to end such harvesting, Graham Doyle, Deputy Commissioner of the DPC, told AFP.

In a statement, the EU’s representative, the DPC, said that the case it filed with the Irish High Court last month is now closed.

“The proceedings have been struck out on the basis of X’s agreement to continue to adhere to the terms of the undertaking (made on August 8) on a permanent basis,” said the statement.

“The DPC welcomes today’s outcome, which protects the rights of EU/EEA citizens,” it said.

The DPC, which collaborates with European regulators, filed an urgent High Court lawsuit last month alleging that EU data protection regulations (GDPR) were broken.

The authority said it had “significant concerns” that the harvesting “gave rise to a risk to the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals.”

Concerning X’s data collection methods, eight European nations have lodged complaints, claiming that these were very likely” in breaking the rules.

According to NOYB, X ought to have asked users’ express agreement before permitting data gathering and made its policies more accessible to them.
