Yandex of Russia intends to invest in Indonesia's AI, says Minister Meutya Hafid

Yandex, a Russian internet behemoth, intends to invest in Indonesia’s AI ecosystem, according to the communications and technology minister of the Southeast Asian nation.

Following a meeting with Alexander Popovskiy, the head of Yandex’s international search business, on Thursday, Indonesia’s communications minister, Meutya Hafid, claimed the company had communicated its intention to “widen the search engine platform in Indonesia,” according to a statement released by the ministry on Friday.

Neither the size of the possible investment nor the kind of the investment were specified.

When questioned about the quantity and timeline of the investment, the ministry did not immediately reply.
A request for comment from Yandex, dubbed “Russia’s Google,” was not immediately answered. The company is one of Russia’s top AI startups and creates its own huge language models.

However, the West has attempted to limit Russia’s access to technologies that could support its conflict against Ukraine, and key international manufacturers of microchips have stopped exporting to Russia, which has hindered the industry’s growth in Russia.

In recent months, a number of international digital companies have expressed interest in Indonesia due to its large population of internet-savvy youth.
Indonesia’s former communications minister announced in April that the country’s telco company, PT Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and AI chip maker Nvidia would construct a $200 million artificial intelligence center in Central Java this year.

Microsoft announced earlier this year that it will build data centers and invest $1.7 billion over the next four years to grow cloud services and artificial intelligence in Indonesia.
